Maharaj’s Guidance for Higher Education

Passing B.Com as Foretold

Everyone was saying that the B.Com results were extremely difficult that year. Still, Narendra passed exactly as Maharaj had predicted long before. Now the question arose: *What next?* Should he study further, take a job or start a business? These thoughts constantly troubled him.

So he wrote a letter to Vyankatanath Maharaj, asking: “Should I prepare for I.A.S.? Or I.F.S.? Or pursue C.A.? Here are all my options…”

Maharaj replied immediately and clearly: “Do C.A. The C.A. course will suit you.”

Narendra’s Reluctance and Maharaj’s Simple Explanation

Interestingly, Narendra had never wanted to study commerce. His commerce education had begun *against his wishes*, so he had no liking for it. He also had no interest in becoming a Chartered Accountant, nor any financial support for such an expensive course.

Later, when Narendra met Maharaj, he asked playfully:

“Maharaj, you told me to do C.A. But do you even know what C.A. means?”

Maharaj smiled and said with innocence and wisdom:

“No, my child. How would we know? We have studied only till 6th or 7th. We do not know English. But we have seen businessmen: money comes in, they write it; money goes out, they write it; they calculate profit and loss; someone checks if it is correct and signs it. Isn’t that the course?”

In this simple way, Maharaj explained the essence of auditing. Then he said firmly: “You will become a C.A.”

Preparing Narendra for a Distant Journey

After B.Com, Maharaj knew Narendra would have to go far away for higher studies — away from his familiar surroundings and away from Maharaj’s physical presence. One day Maharaj casually told him:

“Child, whenever you get time, read *Dasbodh*, *Gurucharitra*, *Dnyaneshwari* and Tukaram’s *Abhangas*. If you can read them, do so. Everything will happen automatically.”

Narendra felt he was not mature enough to understand the deeper meaning behind these words.

The Path Opens Automatically

Soon after, quite unexpectedly, an acquaintance offered to sponsor Narendra’s C.A. studies. Just as Maharaj had said, the path opened by itself. Thus, in 1958, Narendra’s C.A. journey began, and he moved to Dhule for the four-year course.

In Nagpur, he had frequently met Maharaj — seeing him naturally, discussing many subjects, receiving guidance. But once the C.A. course started, contact reduced almost completely. Still, Narendra constantly remembered Maharaj’s words. Sometimes he felt as if Maharaj were standing before him; sometimes Maharaj appeared in dreams.

Shaping from Within

Due to his studies, Narendra interacted with many new types of people and gained exposure to different subjects and situations. He always felt that Maharaj was shaping him from within — that Maharaj wanted a deep inner transformation. Even without direct conversation, he sensed that huge changes were being made inside him.

Although physically far from Maharaj and family, he felt that this distance was part of Maharaj’s divine plan. Maharaj could appear anywhere at will and visited Narendra spiritually whenever needed.

The Scriptures as Keys to Higher Knowledge

The scriptures Maharaj had mentioned — *Dasbodh*, *Gurucharitra*, *Dnyaneshwari*, Tukaram’s *Abhangas* — were actually keys to cosmic knowledge. Through them, Maharaj would reveal:

  • the creation of the universe
  • how divine forces operate
  • how the Nath Sampradaya works
  • deeper secrets explained in *Gurucharitra*

But all this required time — perhaps that is why Maharaj sent him into the long C.A. course.

And Maharaj had said so simply:

“Read those books. Everything else will happen on its own.”
