Akola -- A city of Culture And Spiritual Heritage
Akola is one of the culturally rich and spiritually vibrant cities of the Vidarbha region in India. Located on the banks of the Mayuranga (also called Morna) River, the city is known as Rajrajeshwar Nagari. This name comes from the ancient temple of Shri Rajrajeshwar Mahadev, the self-manifested deity who is worshipped as the city’s guardian. For centuries, this temple has been a center of faith for the people of Akola, and it continues to shine with the same devotion even today.
The Legend of Rajrajeshwar Mahadev
On the western bank of the Morna River stands a naturally manifested Shivling, the sacred form of Lord Shiva. Facing this holy shrine is a tall, fort-like hill called Asadgad, ruled long ago by a king known as Akolsingh.
Akolsingh’s wife was a deeply devoted queen. Every night, after her sacred bath, she would quietly walk to the Shiva temple for her evening prayers. One day, the king grew suspicious of her late-night visits and secretly followed her.
When the queen discovered that her pure devotion had been misunderstood, she was heartbroken. As she reached the temple, she prayed with deep pain in her voice:
“O Lord of all Lords… compassionate Shiva… take me into Your divine light.”
Moved by her devotion, Lord Shiva blessed her, and it is said that she merged into His radiant presence at that very moment. This sacred place still stands as a testimony to her devotion.
Next to the Shiva temple is an ancient shrine dedicated to Adi Guru Shri Dattatreya. Together, these two holy sites form the spiritual heart of Akola and represent the city’s timeless connection with faith, devotion, and divine energy.
