Confusion About the Guru

Many people experience this subtle dilemma — whenever we think of great saints or extraordinary beings of the past, our mind becomes emotional and heavy. Thoughts arise such as: “If only I had lived in their time…” or “If only I had met such divine beings…”. In these thoughts we forget the living saints and spiritually evolved people present today, who will be remembered as ideals by future generations. By doing so, we often overlook the golden opportunity available in our own lifetime.

Why Does This Happen?

The mind becomes confused and doubtful. Even when past merits bring a person to a Guru, the mind continues to entertain doubts. It is better not to accept a Guru formally if the mind remains filled with suspicion. Instead, one should first purify the heart, develop sincerity, and strengthen inner faith. Even if this preparation takes a few lifetimes, it creates a foundation strong enough for real spiritual progress.

What Happens When One Accepts a Guru but Remains Confused?

Such a person may perform all rituals mechanically, celebrate Guru Purnima every year, and participate in spiritual activities, yet still fail to experience inner progress. The reason is simple: they have not yet learned how to receive from the Guru.

What Should a Disciple Do?

To progress genuinely, one must make constant effort to receive what the Guru intends to give. This means looking deeply into the Guru’s teachings, taking from the Guru whatever is necessary for inner transformation, and striving to align oneself with the Guru’s vision and consciousness. Only through this inner alignment can a seeker uplift himself and achieve true spiritual evolution.
