Guru’s Inner Influence

Introduction: This chapter explains how a True Guru silently transforms a disciple. A seeker may feel “I am the same,” but the Guru’s presence gradually reshapes the mind, senses, and tendencies from within.

Power of Surroundings

Our thoughts and emotions change according to the environment:

* In places of devotion—like spiritual talks or singing—pure thoughts arise. * In places of conflict—anger, aggression, and negativity arise.

These influences last only while we remain in that environment.

Influence of the Guru

The Guru’s influence is very different:

* Their presence slowly dissolves lower qualities such as desire, anger, pride, attachment, and jealousy. * Their spiritual energy (sattva) increases purity and clarity in the seeker. * The seeker’s senses become more refined and sensitive. * He begins to intuitively understand the nature of people around him.

The more time spent with the Guru, the stronger the transformation.

My Experience with Vyankatnath Maharaj

The author shares how his own transformation happened naturally after meeting Maharaj.

When he asked the Guru: “Are there any restrictions on my food or habits?” Maharaj replied: “No restrictions. Do whatever feels right to you.”

The Guru’s intention, however, was different from what the author imagined. Though no rules were imposed, the Guru silently shaped his inner tendencies.

Over time, without effort, he left meat, alcohol, and smoking—purely from inner change.

The Turning Point

After 12 years with Maharaj, an incident occurred on the festival of Dhulivandan.

The author sat with friends who were eating meat—a habit he had given up for many years. That day, a thought arose:

“Guru knows everything. He said do what you feel like. If someone serves meat into my plate, I will eat it.”

A friend unknowingly placed meat on his plate.

The author picked a piece and brought it near his mouth while silently remembering the Guru.

Miraculous Intervention

At that very moment:

* A strong shock-like force hit his hand * His hand involuntarily moved away * And he clearly heard Maharaj’s voice:

“My child, do not eat this. We are right here with you. Throw it aside, wash your hands, and continue your meal.”

He obeyed instantly. From that day, the desire for such food disappeared completely.

Later, Maharaj said:

“If you had eaten it, we would have eaten it through you. But whatever goes against our wish will never be allowed to happen.”

Guru’s Unseen Work

True Gurus:

* Constantly work on the disciple’s inner nature * Observe their tendencies and remove harmful desires * Know the disciple’s mind even before he becomes aware of it * Guide him gradually toward purity and higher states

The process is deep and often unknown to the disciple himself.

Essence

A Guru-disciple relationship is not merely external—it is subtle and transformative. A True Guru has influence over:

* The disciple’s senses * His mind * His life-force

This inner guidance shapes the disciple into a higher being, preparing him for spiritual realisation.
