Mukund Mandir in Akola is not just a place of worship; it has emerged as a symbol of women’s empowerment, thanks to the vision of Dhondopant Mukund Deshpande and the leadership of his wife, Geetabai (Gitāātyā) Deshpande.
In the 1940s–50s, most temples restricted women from active participation in religious and social life. At Mukund Mandir, this tradition was broken. Women were given leadership roles in pooja, aarti, bhajan, and community service.
Geetabai Deshpande became the cornerstone of women’s empowerment at the temple. She lived at the temple, guided women in devotional activities, and encouraged participation in social service. Her leadership instilled the belief that “religion is not only for men; women also have a place.”
During Navratri, special bhajan mandals for women were organized under her guidance. Women actively participated in competitions, plays, and dandiya, demonstrating that their roles could extend beyond domestic boundaries into public life.
Women were also involved in annadan (food donation) and helping the needy, gaining confidence and social recognition through active service.
Mukund Mandir ensured that women were respected equally during religious and social activities. This cultural shift empowered future generations to participate confidently in social and religious life.
During the 2022 temple renovation, women played an active role in fundraising, planning, and execution, showing that the seeds of empowerment planted decades ago have grown into strong branches.
Women today often say: “The temple helped us discover our capabilities.” Mukund Mandir continues to demonstrate that when women are given opportunities, they can significantly contribute to societal development.
Mukund Mandir’s legacy is not only about religious inclusivity but also about empowering women. Thanks to the foresight of Dhondopant Mukund Deshpande and the leadership of Geetabai Deshpande, the temple stands as a center recognizing women’s strength in both spiritual and social spheres.
